The first lighthouse in Japan; it is said to have been constructed in
the Kamakura period, however this remains unclear. Originally located
approximately 200 m west of its current point (a monument stands there
now), the old lighthouse was destroyed by typhoons and relocated to construct
roads, finally ending up in its current location. At the time, the location
was close to the shoreline, and the lighthouse fulfilled its role adroitly. |
