Access : 100 m southeast of Hankai Railway. Anryu-machi Station
This area was all coastline until the middle of the Edo period and was
known for its sparkling white sands and deep green pines. Arare ("hail")
was so named because the wind in the pines sounded like hail. This was
so distinctive as to be recorded in the ancient tanka poem collection
Manyoshu; however, with the construction works being carried out on the
Yamato River and the development of new rice fields, the coastline gradually
receded and the view changed completely. The road before the monument
is the Kishu Highway, which begins at the milestone at the eastern end
of Korai Bridge, and follows the Sakai-suji road south to Wakayama. This
area continues to reflect the atmosphere and feeling of the old highway,
and efforts are being made in order to honor the site's rich history,
such as by creating new signposts featuring the name of the old highway. |
