Osaka Tennoji
Zoo |
|
 |
Although
it is located in the middle of a large urban city, you can meet a variety of
animals. |
The Osaka Tennoji Zoo, opened on January 1, 1915, is
the third oldest zoo in Japan. The zoo currently houses about 900 animals of 200
different species in an area of about 11 hectares. As a natural oasis in the metropolis of Osaka, the zoo
attracts more than 1.2 million visitors annually. The Osaka Tennoji Zoo features a number of “landscape
immersion exhibits” which reproduce as closely as possible the natural habitats
and environments of the animals in order to help explain how they live. These exhibits are very popular with
visitors. Such landscape exhibits include the Reptile House
“IFAR”; the African Savanna Zone which houses various animals such as
hippopotamuses, giraffes, and lions; and the Asian Tropical Rainforest
Zone which is home to the Asian elephants. During the daily feeding times, visitors can see the
animals in their active and energetic form.
On most weekends, there are “Keeper’s Talk” sessions
where zoo staff explain interesting facts about the animal’s behavior. (Sorry, but at the present time, these
explanations are done only in Japanese.)
In addition to the above, there are many other events
held at the zoo.
