Access : Approximately 50 m south of Sumie 1-chome on the municipal bus line
In 1351, Yoshiakira Ashikaga of the Northern Imperial Court surrendered to the south. As a result, Emperor Go-Murakami of the Southern Imperial Court moved the following year from Ano'o in Nara to Shoinden, in the property belonging to Kunika Tsumori, chief priest of Sumiyoshi Taisha, and made this his Angu, or temporary palace. Yoshiakira later regrouped his forces and eventually defeated the Emperor's men, thus forcing Go-murakami back to Ano'o. Subsequently, the Emperor continued his wandering ways, the ancient imperial capital Kyoto was never recaptured, Go-murakami died on March 11, 1368 at the age of 41, and Emperor Chokei ascended to the imperial throne.
