Shogon Jodoji Temple
Location : Tezukayama-higashi 5-chome
Access : Approximately 100 m southeast of Sumiyoshi-higashi Station on the Nankai Railway, Koya Line
The temple is estimated to have been created in the Tengyo period (930-946); its main deity is the Fudo Myo'o, otherwise known as Acala, a god who quells worldly desires. When the temple was recreated by an imperial order from Emperor Shirakawa in 1084, a gold plate inscribed with words to the effect of "Shogon Gokuraku Jodo of the Seven Treasures" was unearthed, and thus the temple got its name. The temple buildings were just as ornately and grandly beautiful as Shitennoji Temple, but were destroyed by the ravages of war. The present buildings were recreated in 1682. The grounds of the temple have been designated by the prefectural government as a place of historical interest.
